Finance Act 2023 introduced the definition of “digital content monetization” to include offering for payment entertainment, social, literal, artistic, educational or any other material electronically through any medium or channel in any of the following forms;
- Advertisement on website and social media by partnering with brands.
- Paid brand promotion by content creators.
- Affiliate marketing where an influencer earns for click on products they are promoting.
- Subscription charged to access a creator’s content.
- Membership plans for exclusive content or early access.
- Licensing content including music and photographs for use in users’ own projects.
- Earnings including commission or fees from crowd funding.
Income from digital content monetization will be subject to a withholding tax at 5% and 20% for residents and non-residents respectively, effective July 2023.
